The Importance of Self-Care: Lessons from My Life

As a therapist and a busy person, I often find myself juggling multiple roles: clinician, adjunct professor, friend, sister, daughter and unofficial party planner to my family. With so much on my plate, it’s easy to forget the importance of self-care. Today, I want to share some strategies that have helped me prioritize my well-being amidst the chaos.

Creating a Routine

Establishing a daily routine has been a game changer for me. It provides me structure and helps me carve out time for self-care. I try tostart my mornings with a “ritual” that sets a positive tone for the day. These days is preparing and sipping on my morning coffee. I also make sure to schedule breaks throughout my day to recharge, including going on mental health walks and a good ol’ whole body stretch.

Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness has become an essential part of my self-care routine. I practice deep breathing exercises (especially in-between client sessions) whenever I feel overwhelmed, and I’ve found that guided meditation apps, such as Headspace, helps me stay grounded. These practices allow me to reconnect with myself and reduce stress/tension.

Engaging in Physical Activity

I’ve learned that physical activity is crucial for my mental health. Whether it’s dancing in my living room or going for a walk with my foster puppy, I choose activities that bring me joy. I also very much enjoy a hot yoga session or hot pilates class. Overall, setting realistic goals and celebrating small victories keeps me motivated to stay active.

Lesson to Learn:

Self-care is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. By incorporating small and simple strategies into my daily life, I’ve been able to create a more balanced and fulfilling existence.
