Hello, everyone! I’m Alexandra, and today I want to dive into something that has always captivated me: the complexity of human beings. As a therapist and a twin, I’ve spent a lot of time pondering how two people can grow up in the same household yet lead such different lives. It’s a question that has fueled my passion for psychology and understanding the human experience.
Growing up, I was always intrigued by how our brains come up with ideas and make decisions based on our histories. My own journey has been shaped by my experiences as a first-generation immigrant, navigating the cultural differences between my Venezuelan roots and American life. I’ve seen firsthand how my family’s background has influenced our paths, from my parents’ sacrifices to the opportunities we’ve been given.
As a child, I was identified as gifted in third grade, which was both exciting and confusing. I didn’t fully understand what being in a gifted program meant, but I knew it set me apart. This early recognition of my intelligence sparked my interest in psychology, as I began to explore the ways our backgrounds and experiences shape who we are.
Coming from a warm and community-oriented culture in Venezuela, I often find myself reflecting on the individualistic nature of American society. Living in Miami, a melting pot of cultures, has given me a unique perspective. I’ve experienced the beauty of diversity, but I’ve also witnessed the challenges that come with it.
I’ve seen my family face discrimination while also being embraced by the community. My parents, who held degrees in Venezuela, had to navigate a new world where their qualifications didn’t translate. They worked in factories and restaurants, jobs far removed from their professional backgrounds. This reality has instilled in me a deep appreciation for their sacrifices and a desire to make them proud.
As I continue my journey as a therapist, I carry these experiences with me. They remind me of the importance of understanding each individual’s unique story and the factors that shape their lives. I believe that by embracing our complexities, we can foster empathy and connection in our work.
I’m excited to share more of my journey with you and explore the fascinating world of psychology together!
